So, what’s this all about?

July 30, 2009

In 9 AD, Publius Quinctilius Varus, unwisely trusting the German Arminius, a foederati cavalry commander, and had three of his Roman Legions routed at the Teutobergerwald (Teutoberg Forest).  Aside: If I were to compare it with a modern battle, I would associated it to the Battle for LZ Albany in the U.S. Vietnam War (in terms of poor use of terrain) or the Battle of the Little Bighorn (aka “Custer’s Last Stand) as far as being a total rout.  When reports were rendered to Augustus in Rome, he rended his clothing, would not cut his hair for months, and was said to often mutter Quintili Vare, legiones redde!  (“Quintilius Varus, Bring Me Back My Legions!”) So, you ask, where are you going with this?  Actually, it’s very simple, and then again, not totally simple.  To dispel any notions in advance, this is not necessarily an indictment of present or past use of the U.S. Military, although I won’t rule such a topic out a priori (in advance).  What I fully intend to talk about is general trends in American politics, public policy, culture and morals that put the U.S. into a position that is destructive to it’s national security.  After all, no one solitary factor led to the downfall of Rome.  Cliche though it may sound, Rome was not built in a day, nor did it fall in one. Having said all that, my intent is to cause the reader to consider from where we came, what we’ve done, and make an informed decision on what, if anything, needs to be done.  An informed, educated and active citizenry is the bulwark against tyranny. Legiones Redde! Tony
